Adidas is a multinational sports goods manufacturer headquartered in Germany. It was founded in 1948 by businessman Adolf Dassler. The name “Adidas” originates from the first parts of his name. Many people mistakenly believe that the name comes from the phrase “All Day I Dream About Sport.”
It is the parent company of Reebok, TaylorMade, and Rockport. Although sports shoes are its main products, the company also manufactures bags, eyewear, and other apparel. Today, Adidas is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second largest in the world. In 2010, its annual revenue was 11.99 billion.
In its early years, Adolf Dassler worked together with his brother Rudolf Dassler. Their company was then known as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. In the 1936 Summer Olympics, athlete Jesse Owens participated wearing shoes sponsored by Adolf Dassler. Jesse Owens’ victory brought greater recognition and prestige to their company.
During World War II, Rudolf Dassler became more closely associated with Germany’s Nazi Party. Due to certain incidents related to this, the brothers eventually parted ways. In 1949, Rudolf Dassler went on to establish the sportswear company Puma.
Today, Adidas continues to hold a top position among the most trusted sports product brands in the world. Adidas polo T-shirts, socks, track pants, and many other products are now available online.
