One Shared Room (Story)

Uvais Veeramangalam

There was a time when Raman’s family lived together in an old house named Krishnavilasam, and those days were as fresh and beautiful as tender green leaves.

The river flowing between the trees, the children running about in the daylight, and the grandmother’s stories at night-all of these remained shining memories in the hearts of the family.

Raman was the head of the family, which included his wife Sharada and their three children. Sharada’s care and affection were the solution to every problem in the household.

Every festival, every wish, and every moment of happiness that once took place in that house seemed to give life to both the home and the family.

Time changed. The children left for the city for their studies and later started working in different places. As each of them began their own families, their connection with Krishnavilasam slowly began to fade.

The family drifted apart from the room where they once lived together and from the laughter that once echoed through the house.

Although Raman loved his children deeply, his heart felt empty when they moved away. Sharada’s heart, too, was quietly broken, just like his.

“One day, living in a house without the children like this feels so difficult,” Raman said thoughtfully to Sharada.

“Yes, they all have their own lives. Haven’t we fulfilled our responsibilities? Now we must respect their independence,” Sharada replied calmly.

Even so, their days became repetitive-plucking flowers in the morning and sitting in remembrance in the evenings. Their rooms were now empty, filled only with memories.

A year later, on Raman’s birthday, the children planned a surprise. All three of them arrived at Krishnavilasam with their families.

After a long time, the house was once again filled with laughter and songs. They shared stories of their lives and refreshed old memories with new joy. The grandmother’s old play areas were recreated for the children, and a special room was transformed into a space for everyone to spend time together.

Krishnavilasam was once again filled with the sweetness of life. The time they spent together made everyone realize the true importance of family bonds.

One night, Raman said to his children and their spouses:

“No matter how busy life gets, you must always find time to come back to this house. Because relationships must be preserved.”

From that day on, Krishnavilasam became an island of love. Life danced between three generations. And the new room in the house-the one shared room-remained forever a symbol of family values and love.
