How Was the Smiley Face Born?
In 1963, an insurance company named State Mutual Life Assurance Company approached Harvey Ross Ball. After a company merger, their goal was to boost employee morale and improve workplace spirit. Ball quickly came up with a simple design – a yellow smiley face with two black eyes and a curved smile.
It took him less than ten minutes to create this design. For his work, he was paid just $45. Little did he know that this tiny creation would one day capture the hearts of millions across the world.
How Did the Smiley Face Spread Worldwide?
The company began using the smiley face on buttons, posters, and promotional items. By the 1970s, it had gained massive popularity and could be seen everywhere – from T-shirts to stickers.
However, Ball had not patented the design, allowing others to benefit commercially. In 1971, a French journalist named Franklin Loufrani trademarked a similar design in France. He later founded The Smiley Company, which went on to generate enormous commercial success from the symbol.
Harvey Ross Ball’s Final Message – World Smile Day
Although he never gained major financial benefits from his creation, Harvey Ross Ball never felt bitter about it. In 1999, he established World Smile Day, celebrated on the first Friday of October every year across the world.
His message was simple and beautiful:
“Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.”
Though he passed away in 2001, the smiley face continues to spread happiness across the globe.
